Carnival is a festival beloved by adults and children. It is an opportunity to let go a little, forget the problems and enliven the cold winter days with jokes, singing, dancing and good food.
In the central area of Umbria in recent years many initiatives, related to this time of year, became more and more able to engage and entertain citizenship, passing tourists and lovers came for Valentine’s Day.
Some events have a tradition that goes beyond the fifty editions such as Carnival of Sant’Eraclio, a village near Foligno. The event runs in three consecutive Sundays (February 17-24 and March 3, 2019) when carnival floats of the boys’ Carnival arrive to town, with always new subjects, accompanied by marching bands and majorettes.
Newest event but no less interesting: the fun and colorful “Carnival of Wonders” in Assisi (2017’s edition canceled), organized by Assicity, offers to children of all ages a parade of carnival floats through the streets of the historic center. The event covers all afternoon Sunday of Carnival. The parade, animated by orchestras and masked groups according to the subject of their wagon, start from Porta Nuova and arrives at the Town Square. There, the Assisi’s afternoon continues with skill games and laboratories for the production of masks with paper and recycled materials; expert makeup artists are present to help the smaller and give a touch of style to the masks. The event is enlivened by music and performances of dance schools of the district of Assisi, with an award for the best performance. Finally, for the greedy, in the hall of the Pinacoteca there is a buffet offered by local restaurants and bakeries.
Another event of the territory is The City Carnival in Bastia Umbra at the Mazzini Square. The event involves various local associations and city schools, with events in the historic center (25 february) by Ludoteca and Proloco.
The tradition of Carnival in Umbria has a long history. In Perugia, to retrace the past tradition, the Days of Bartoccio was born, three weeks (cooming soon) dedicated to the ancient perugina mask native of Pian del Tevere. The main feature of this rough character of the seventeenth century are his Bartocciate, biting and impertinent satires that highlight shortcomings and defects of society and politics. The square, the villages and city neighborhoods of Perugia are protagonists of concerts, exhibitions, dances, bartocciate, shows, conferences, theater of puppets and many weird and fun surprises.
In Umbria with the Carnival 2017 there is something for all tastes. To stay in Assisi you can see a selection of villas, bed and breakfasts and apartments suggested by us.
